Barber Trivia

"Shave and a haircut, two bits!"

This little 7-note riff has been around since the late 1800's, but the words weren't added until around 1939, notably in a Milton Berle song and later, by the Three Stooges.  After that, the tune became common in many cartoon skits.

During the Vietnam war, it was reported that POW's would knock out the first five notes on a wall, then wait to hear the last two from other prisoners, identifying themselves as Americans.

By the way, two bits is the equivalent of 25 cents, not a bad price to pay for quality service, even in 1939!
